There’s nothing better than rediscovering old objects that you’d forgotten about when having a clear out, so imagine Danish furniture manufacturer Carl Hansen & Son’s delight when they disscovered this classic sofa design in the Hans J. Wegner archives. They were so pleased with the find, that they decided to put it back into production with new two and three-seat versions named CH162 and CH163.

Beautiful and luxurious, this mid-century masterpiece was originally designed in 1965 by legendary Danish desinger, Hans J. Wegner.
It’s the carefully considered details that make this design truly unique. Tapered legs become wider as they reach the armrest creating an elegant triangular shape, and an enlarged wooden plug placed in the middle of the triangle becomes a characteristic detail of the design. The clean, modern frame is softened by reversible cushions, which work with the frame’s angling to allow for comfortable sitting.

This modern verison of Wegner’s design features cushions with a foam core surrounded by European down and cold foamer. This might seem ordinary enough now, but in 1965 when the original was introduced, feather filled cushions were revolutionary. “The sofa series was originally known as the ‘Down Cushion Sets’, because cushions filled with feathers were an innovation at the time. Wegner chose feather cushions to create a soft and inviting look – a style that broke with the standard practice of using cushions of fixed upholstery.” says Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Son.
